An Introduction to Art & Design
Time is inevitable. It happens every day, there’s no fighting it. It’s the most common daily occurrence known to man, and this is what I have based my five minute film on.
I began with taking various photographs of a clock from different angles whilst the minute hand was in motion. Using Final Cut Pro I produced two thirty second sequences. I exported these into a movie clip; from here I cut, copied and pasted my clips to match with the beats of my chosen music (Massive Attack – Angel). I added effects to some of the clips, using video filters and over writing some of the clips on top of each other. I continued until I had a sixty second clip.
I then looped my clip five times, to create the five minute length. I added text to the beginning and end of my film to generate a much bigger statement.
‘Create a white 3D object with 57 sides’. I didn’t expect my inspiration for this piece to be right outside my window. The geometric structures of the buildings outside made me think; think of a lavish, structured head piece, made from tough materials, such as Aluminium and Copper.
Little did I realise that my initial image would be completely different to the final outcome.
I began by taking photographs of the surrounding buildings in Birmingham and analysing them to create designs. The original designs I had produced were not sufficient for the purpose I had in mind, so I began to look for more diverse inspiration from hat designers such as Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones.
I was amazed at how they manufactured such extravagant and outlandish hats out of soft materials, yet still contained the structured image I longed for. I began to experiment in my millinery skills.
I choose to create fascinators; as I believe they would sit on the head better than my original designs. I produced my first design, simply to see if I could create such an accessory. This design was made from white Ostrich feathers and black Ostrich spines, linked with eight individual pearls. I adored the ways the colours and textures contrast, so I carried this on to my final design.
My ultimate design and work that I am presenting is made up of thirty seven white ribbon loops and twenty white goose biot feathers. I matched my design with a black and white goose biot feather neck piece to in keep with the black and white contrast.
I shot my design in front of a black background, so the white stood out.
Making something move from one place to another is a lot harder than you think. My contextual piece, involved me traveling from Birmingham to Essex, via London. With this I took a sculpture I had made during my metal work workshop. My original plan was to photograph it in different areas which represented me (for example the Bullring in Birmingham, as I enjoy shopping there), yet I felt the finished product wouldn’t be as interesting as my final piece.
Instead I photographed my sculpture from different angles and edited it in Photoshop. I then had these images printed onto acetate. I experimented with how I could incorporate these within my photographs of my surroundings.
I experimented with diverse ways in doing this, using my printing knowledge. For example I began with having my photographs printed in Black and white and my acetates in colour.
My final piece has all four photographs printed black and white onto acetate, with my sculpture printed onto, presented in black frames.
The set of four, represent my journey from one place to another, thus ‘Make a work which moves from one place to another’.
I conducted my final project on the web designer package ‘Web Easy 8 – Professional’ and designed an online portfolio. My design is simplistic and crisp, with a touch of elegance. I wanted to keep my design as simple as possible, so the selective audience are able to navigate their way around my site easily to view my final pieces of work from this module.
My website is made up of six pages:
· The entrance page
· Home page
· Time is Inevitable
· 57 sides
· Previous work
· Movement within Metal
If there are any problems with the publishing of my site, I have also submitted my original designs in a power point, as a duplicate version.
